Nigeria, Kenya to improve relations

Nigeria assured Kenya of better and more cordial relationship as the country fashions a new constitution and good governance for its people, PANA reported from here. Nigeria’s Vice President Namadi Sambo told his visiting Kenyan counterpart, Kalonzo Musyoka the Nigerian Government would like to share its parliamentary experience with Kenya and in other socio-economic sectors, especially in the area of transportation, which Africa has not been able to fully develop.

Assuring that the government would smoothen the transportation means between the two countries, he said the ministers of foreign affairs and aviation would meet with the Kenyan High Commissioner to work out modalities for the operation of direct flight from Nairobi to Abuja.

The Nigerian Number Two citizen noted that Libyan Airways is also requesting a direct flight to Abuja.
According to him, “I really appreciate this visit and we are looking forward to see how we can bring social transformation between our two countries. We are also looking forward to see better cooperation, as we believe the problem of Africa can be better solved by Africans themselves. I can assure you that we are going to have closer interaction at all levels. I will facilitate the relationship between your parliament and our parliament here.”

Sambo also gave the Kenyan Vice President documents containing the Federal Government Development Plan as well as Roadmaps on Power and Water development.

Earlier, Musyoka who came in company with a principal Member of Parliament Mohamed Affey, said he was in the country to deliver a congratulatory message of President Mwai Kibaki to President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice President Sambo over their victory at the last party primaries.

He said he was in the country with Affey to learn the political organisation of Nigeria, as the parties’ primaries were watched in Kenya, adding that they were impressed to hear that about 70 million people are expected to register in the ongoing voters’ registration exercise, while in his country, they would be happy if they can get seven million people to register.

Musyoka said his country is doing well in the Eastern part of Africa, adding that  the rumour that Kenya wanted to pull out of the International Criminal Court (ICC) is far from the truth.

Said he, “Kenya has a new constitution which it forged out last year, it is like having a second republic. What Mr. President wants to do now is to appoint the Chief Justice and Director of Public Prosecutions this coming week but Parliament is on recess.”

According to him, Kenya wants to get its Judicial Commission Bill to be able to strengthen the judiciary as the new constitution is drawn the Nigerian way, having the executive, the legislature and the judiciary.

He solicited for an exchange programme and more person-to-person interaction with Nigeria, adding that his country’s High Commissioner would facilitate a familiarisation visit by members of his administration to study the political organisation in Nigeria and  also requested that Kenyan Airways be allowed to fly direct to Abuja.
