Lagos, Nigeria - The Nigerian Army has started training 2,000 soldiers in counter-terrorism, as part of the overall response to the rising cases of terrorism in the country, according to the Army Chief, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika.

Speaking at an Army conference in the capital city of Abuja Tuesday, the Army Chief said the soldiers were being trained by experts on counter terrorism and other terrorism challenges in Jaji and Kachia, in the country's northern state of Kaduna.

“The army believes strongly that once human capacity is developed to the required level, every other thing will fall in place,” he said, while justifying the training.

The Nigerian Army is at the forefront of efforts to check the challenges posed by the Islamic sect Boko Haram, which has increasingly carried out terrorist attacks, mostly in the north, since 2009.

A special military task force dominated by soldiers has been deployed to battle the sect.

According to Nigeria's top military chief, Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petinrin, the sect has so far killed over 1,200 people.
