Eagles will lose some matches – Keshi

By John Egbokhan

Stephen Keshi has said that the Eagles were bound to lose some matches during his term as head coach.

After failing to reach the last Africa Cup of Nations jointly hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, Keshi was given the Eagles job with a mandate to qualify for the next Nations Cup In South Africa and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Last week in Kigali, his team started their quest to achieve the first mandate with 1-1 draw with Rwanda, a result that Keshi said was a lucky one for the Nigerians.

And speaking in an interview with AIT, Keshi, who once handled Togo and Mali, admitted that it was foolhardy for people to think that his team were going to have it easy against other countries.

“Football has changed. Other countries are improving. I know some people will not like what I am about to say but we are going to lose some matches because we are rebuilding. Things have changed a lot and for us to get back on track, it is going to take some time and during this period, Nigerians can expect mixed results. That is the truth that we must accept”, said the former Eagles captain.

He said further that his quest to transform the Eagles to a super team was going to take at least four years, insisting that there is no short cut to achieving soccer greatness than to plan for the long term.

“People keep talking about the 1994 squad that I captained to the World Cup in United States of America and how great the players were but they forgot that it took Clemens Westerhof five years from 1989 to make that team super.

“I was part of the team and I know what worked for Westerhof and I believe that with time and patience, we can become great again. I have the passion to succeed but it takes two to tango. I need time and want people to be patient with us. The road is going to be rough but we are going to come out a stronger team”, added Keshi.
