Police: Gunmen kill 4 officers in north Nigeria

GOMBE, Nigeria - (AP) -- Police say gunmen have attacked three banks and a police station in Nigeria's northeast, killing four policemen.

Gombe state deputy police chief Kabir Muhammad said Thursday that the attacks occurred in a town some 85 miles (140 kilometers) from the state capital.

A nurse who asked for anonymity because she is not allowed to speak to press said a fifth policeman was badly wounded.

The attack comes a day after a school was set ablaze overnight. Authorities said no one was hurt.

Police officers and empty schools are typical targets of a radical sect locally known as Boko Haram, which is held responsible for killing more than 300 people this year alone.

The group has launched an increasingly bloody campaign of attacks against Nigeria's government for more than a year.
