Nigeria is expected to experience normal growing season in 2012 with early and heavy rainfall in most part of the country suggesting bumper harvest for farmers, Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), Dr. Anthony Anuforom has said.
Presenting the 2012 rainfall prediction and climate review, Anuforom said this year’s rainfall will start in most part of the country as early a...s February 20 and may stop between October and November.
“Scientific evidence has shown that the systematic application of these data for planning, decision making and management of weather sensitive sectors of the economy produces improved results for the benefit of the socio-economic development and well being of the people,” he said.
Speaking at the event, Aviation Minister Princesses Stella Adaeze Oduah, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs. Anne Ene Ita, commended the agency for being about 70 percent accurate in its 2011 prediction which she said has assisted several states in taking precaution against flood.
The minister reiterated her commitments towards the development of aviation agencies, adding, “Modernization of meteorological and navigational infrastructure for enhancement of safety in our air space is also an important element of the aviation sector roadmap. Bearing in mind that a well-trained and motivated workforce is critical for driving our transformation process, my ministry and the parastatals are also implementing a program of human capital development through training and retraining of various categories of staff, especially those engaged in security and technical duties,” she said.
